Front of the Corbah Scotsman jersey: electric blue and black plaid with thin gold lines

How to Wear a Statement Cycling Jersey (Without Looking Like a Costume)

•

A loud jersey should look like a choice, not a costume.

Plaid, camo, a printed tuxedo: a statement jersey is the fastest way to be remembered on the group ride. It's also easy to overdo. Here's how to build a kit around one bold piece so it looks deliberate, using our Scotsman plaid as the example.

Rule 1: One loud piece, one quiet piece

The simplest outfit is a bold jersey with plain black shorts. Black goes with every print, and it keeps the eye on the pattern. The Scotsman jersey works exactly like this.

It works the other way round too. Bold bibs under a plain jersey is a quieter look, and the pattern still shows when you're on the bike.

Rule 2: If you match, match all the way

Half-matching is the risky middle ground. A jersey and bibs in two different loud prints usually fight. If you want both pieces patterned, make them the same pattern, like the Scotsman jersey with the Scotsman bib shorts. The plaid then reads as one outfit from collar to knee.

Rule 3: Pull one colour out for the accessories

Pick one colour from the print and use it once more: socks, bar tape, bottle or cap. With the Scotsman, a touch of gold or electric blue ties it together. Keep the helmet, shoes and gloves neutral. One echo looks planned; five looks like a uniform.

Rule 4: Fit matters more with a big print

A pattern shows every wrinkle and sag. Check the size guide and choose the size that sits close without pulling. The Scotsman jersey has a pro fit, which is a close cut. Size up if you want a more relaxed feel.

Rule 5: Own it

A statement jersey works best on someone who's clearly enjoying it. Wear it to the café stop, the club ride and the photo at the top of the climb.
