How Should Bib Shorts Fit? A Quick Guide
Bib shorts are the most important piece of kit you own. A good pair disappears on a long ride. A bad pair is all you can think about. The difference is usually fit, not price. Here's how to tell if yours fit, and what to change if they don't.
The quick fit check
Put the bibs on, stand up straight, then get into your riding position (hands on the hoods, back flat). Check these five things:
- Chamois: it should sit flat against you with no folds or gaps. On the bike, the thickest part of the pad should sit under your sit bones.
- Legs: the grippers should stay put without digging in. A small, smooth line is normal. A deep groove or a "sausage" bulge means they're too tight.
- Straps: they should hold the shorts up with light tension when you're bent over. If they dig into your shoulders standing up, the bibs are too short in the body. If they slip off, they're too long.
- Waist and back: no gap at the lower back when you're in position.
- Fabric: close to the skin everywhere, with no loose or baggy areas. Loose fabric moves, and moving fabric rubs.
Why a close fit matters
Bib shorts are meant to fit like a second skin. The compression supports your muscles, and it keeps the chamois exactly where it should be. If the shorts move, the pad moves, and that's where chafing and saddle sores start. That's why pro-cut kit feels snug when you're standing in the hallway. It's built for the bike.
Between sizes?
Our pro cut is close to the body. If you're between sizes, or you prefer a slightly looser feel, size up. And if your first pair isn't right, you're covered: within 15 days you can get the same item in another size at about 20–60% off. See how it works.
Common problems and fixes
- Numbness or pressure: often the saddle or saddle height, not the bibs. If the pad sits forward or back of your sit bones, try the next size.
- Chafing on the inner thigh: the shorts are moving. Try a closer fit, and use chamois cream on long rides.
- Grippers rolling up: usually too small in the leg, or the leg length is wrong for you.
- Straps cutting in: too short in the torso. Size up, or look for a tall fit.
Care that keeps the fit
Wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry. Skip fabric softener and the dryer, which break down the elastic and the pad. A good pair cared for this way lasts for seasons. Full care guide.
